Dr. Arlen Etling
Dr. Arlen Etling is a professor for the AgLEC department. His Doctorate is in International Nonformal Education from the University of Massachusetts. He has taught high school social studies, English, and sports for three years in Cochabamba,
Bolivia. For 13 years he was on the faculty of the University of Arizona where he developed an Extension Education Major and worked as an Extension Community Development Specialist. He taught International Agriculture and coordinated international Citizenship in 4-H at Penn State University for 10 years.
Dr. Etling came to the AgLEC department in 1997 to teach Extension Education graduate courses and coordinate curriculum development for Nebraska 4-H. He served as Director of the IANR International Programs Division and Associate Director of UNL's Office of International Affairs. Dr. Etling has completed a Fulbright teaching and research fellowship in Monterrey, Mexico; and a Senior Fulbright Specialist fellowship in Toledo, Spain.
His current responsibilities include coordination of International Studies for undergraduate students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. This includes (1) helping faculty to organize and promote study abroad, (2) teaching AGRI-282 Introduction to Global Agriculture and Natural Resources, (3) advising students in the CASNR minor in International Agriculture, and (4) advising "Beyond Borders" the CASNR club for students interested in international agriculture. Arlen also teaches a university honors seminar on globalization and the future, and he co-leads seminars to encourage UNL faculty to apply for Fulbright programs.
Dr. Etling's research interests include effectiveness of study abroad programs, leadership in multi-cultural settings, self-assessment of global mindedness by university students, and teaching effectiveness in nonformal educational programs.
