Richard L. "Dick" Fleming is professor emeritus in the department. A native of Ipswich, Mass., he graduated from high school at Paola, Kansas. Fleming received a B.Sc. degree in agricultural journalism from Kansas State University, a M.Sc. in agricultural economics and a Ph.D. in adult and continuing education/higher education, both from the University of Nebraska.

He currently helps prepare department reports and assists with student recruitment as well as spring and fall meeting content and membership of the unit's Advisory Council. Fleming prepares award nominations for faculty and staff in the department and the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Fleming retired from UNL in 1996 after serving in several academic and administrative positions on both UNL campuses. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses and conducted more than 100 communications and marketing workshops in Nebraska, this region and at the national level. Among various awards, he received a Distinguished Service Award from the Nebraska FFA Association, Certificate of Appreciation from the Nebraska Cooperative Extension Association, Certificate of Recognition from the UNL Parents Association and Teaching Council, Legacy Award from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Alumni Association, and Outstanding Cooperation Awards from the Nebraska Agricultural Educators Association and Region III of the National Association of Agricultural Educators.

A past president of the Nebraska Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi, the Midlands Chapter of the National Agri-Marketing Association and the Nebraska Agribusiness Club, he served as chair of the North Central Regional Committee on Communications Research, first chair of the Marketing Specialist Interest Group, and chair of the Communications Administrators of the Association for Communication Excellence. He is a former member of the Executive Committee, Council on University Relations, National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges.
