Earl Russell is a professor emeritus in the department. He retired as professor and head of the department in June 2000. His degrees, all in agricultural education, are from the University of Tennessee (B.S., 1966), the University of Illinois (M.S., 1968), and Ohio State University (Ph.D., 1971). Prior academic positions were at the University of Georgia, Ohio State University, and the University of Illinois. He began his career as a high school teacher of agriculture in New Lenox, Illinois. In addition to administrative duties in the AgLEC department, Dr. Russell was part of a research team on distance education policy in Nebraska, supported by the Agricultural Research Division. He also supervised student teachers in agricultural education on a regular basis. Among his academic distinctions, he is proudest of having been chosen by students as Alpha Zeta's Outstanding Instructor in the College of Agriculture at the University of Illinois, where he was recognized for excellence in teaching on numerous occasions. He served as President of the American Vocational Education Research Association. In addition, he was the first Coordinator of the Advanced Study Center for postdoctoral fellows at the National Center for Research in Vocational Education at Ohio State University. Dr. Russell is available to offer advice and counsel to AgLEC faculty, staff, and students. In this role, he believes he is most effective when responding to requests rather than offering unsolicited advice-at least most of the time! In retirement, he devotes his time to reading, writing, continuing education, public policy issues, digital photography, senior softball, and travel. He and his wife Ellen live in Austin, Texas.
